(New York September 30th 2015), President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has received the Global Championship Award for integrity, courage, leadership and wisdom she has exemplified over the years in steering the affairs of Liberia.
According to a dispatch from New York, President Sirleaf who is currently on the last leg of her trip to the United States after successfully participating in the United Nations General Assembly and met with several bilateral and multilateral partners in pursuit of Liberia’s post-Ebola recovery process , received the award on Wednesday, the 30th of September 2015, from the International Medical Corps at the Loews Regency Hotel in New York.
Presenting the award to President Sirleaf, Ms. Nancy Aossey, President and the CEO of the International Medical Corps, praised the Liberian leader for what she called her courageous leadership and effective manner in which she led the fight against the Ebola Virus. She said President Sirleaf was such an inspirational leader whose leadership style has won her an admiration globally, stressing that she deserves recognition for her positive contributions to her own country and the world at large.
“We have had an opportunity to work in your country; you have shown extraordinary courage and integrity, you are such an inspirational leader.” The Group which has had a long working relationship with Liberia, and contributed immensely towards the global fight against Ebola in the region, said they will remain fully engaged in Liberia and its neighboring countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) and non-Ebola related diseases.
Receiving the Award, President Sirleaf expressed appreciation for the gesture, and informed that the Award belongs the Liberian people who according to her, took real charge of the fight against the Ebola. She named first Responders, doctors, nurses, Incident Management Team among others as real heroes who deserve commendation. President Sirleaf however, explained that the affected countries in the region will remain vigilant and effectively take measures to control other diseases, emphasizing that the Ebola outbreak exposed the weaknesses of our healthcare system which must be addressed.
President Sirleaf is the second person ever to receive this Award, the first being Hilary Clinton, former US Secretary of State who received the award in 2013, for her outstanding leadership.
In more Presidential news, President Sirleaf has met with Board Members of the Sirleaf Market Women who paid a courtesy call on her. The meeting centered on the issues surrounding the effective utilization of the Board to fast track the various projects being implemented in the country.
